Melbourne University Chemical Society
The Melbourne University Chemical Society (MUCS) engages the university community and the general public on chemistry related issues through events and seminars, including a public lecture series that encompasses all aspects of chemistry.
The Melbourne University Chemical Society – MUCS (affectionately known as Mucks) was established in 1903 by Professor David Orme Masson and is the first of the University Chemical Societies in Australia.
The following is a summary of MUCS history extracted from the book ‘From Chalk and Talk to Powerpoint – An account of the first 1000 meetings of the Melbourne University Chemical Society‘ by Valda M. McRae.
The formation of MUCS was one of the many initiatives of Prof. David O. Masson, the first Professor of Chemistry and Head of School at the University of Melbourne (1886-1923). MUCS lecture series started in 1904 and there has been regular meetings held continuously since the society’s commencement. The 1000th MUCS lecture was held on the 17th August 2011 marking a milestone in the society’s history.
The lecture series now include annual memorial lectures for Donald Stranks and Geoff Feutrill as well as a biannual Lady Masson Lecture, held in honour of Mary Masson, wife of Prof. David O. Masson.
