Novel liquid crystalline singlet-fission materials described

PhD student Saghar Massomi-Godarzi (Jones Group) has described new intra-molecular singlet fission materials in Advanced Energy Materials.

Solar cell efficiency can be significantly improved if we can better harvest energy from high energy photons. One way to do this is through singlet fission, using high energy singlet excitons to generate two triplet excitons with half the energy. Saghar has demonstrated that we can use liquid crystallinity to self-assembly intra-molecular singlet fission materials while maintaining the bulk materials properties of the organic semiconductors. This is the first step in enhancing solar cell efficiencies.
