Diversity and inclusion in the School of Chemistry
The School of Chemistry is committed to providing a supportive and equitable environment free of conscious and unconscious bias for all staff, students and visitors regardless of gender, ethnicity or origin, culture, language, relationship status, pregnancy, sexuality, medical conditions or disability, age, and political or religious belief.
Diversity and Inclusion Committee
In 2018 the School of Chemistry (SoC) established an Equity and Diversity Committee, which meets regularly to discuss equity and diversity matters. The Committee aims to:
- Raise awareness of equity, access and diversity with the SoC, and promote a positive workplace culture, which embraces diversity, collegiality and wellbeing.
- Develop and implement best practice with regards to gender, ethnicity, class, carer responsibilities, disability, and sexual orientation during consideration of appointments, promotions and student admission.
- Record and report on the gender and diversity of applicants, shortlists and appointments for new positions, as well as academic promotions and seminar speakers.
- Record and report on gender diversity in undergraduate and graduate students trained by the SoC.
- Investigate new policies and schemes to support staff and students with significant carer responsibilities.
- Provide advice to staff and students within the SoC concerning equity and access issues, and promote transparency and channels of communication.
- Assist in the implementation of the Faculty of Science Diversity and Inclusion Framework and be a conduit of information between School and Faculty-level committees ensuring continuity and consistency.
- Report to the School of Chemistry Executive Committee.

Support
To report issues of discrimination, sexual harassment or bullying:
- Students and visitors can access the Safer Community Program.
- Staff should first, if possible, discuss issues with their line manager and/or local HR representative. They can also access the Employee Assistance Program, make an online report to the Inappropriate Workplace Behaviour Line, or call 1800 685 463 during business hours.
- Outside of the University, 24/7 support is provided by LifeLine and Beyond Blue.

Wellbeing resources
- The University of Melbourne Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides free, confidential, short-term professional counselling to currently enrolled students and staff.
- For students, CAPS also offers free workshops on a range of personal development, mental health and wellbeing issues each semester. Their student workshop page is updated regularly with additional events.
- Melbourne University Sport has a range of resources available to help staff and students stay active during the COVID 19 pandemic.
